I know that many of you are already on holiday vacation, but for our friends who are still rocking the job today, here is something to help pass the time. This circulated around the interwebs before, but the peeps over at Today’s Big Thing posted it today and reminded me of how awesome this short stop-motion animation clip really is. Take all of your favorite classic video game “deaths,” add some snack foods and you get “Game Over.” Enjoy!

It is normal nowadays to see commercial stations flip and bite the dust. But to hear news of a college radio station, especially a large heritage one running at a large state school (Texas Tech University), well, that just makes me mad. KTXT, who has been operational for 47 years, was shut down almost overnight by the Student Media, with no warning. Why? They claim budget cuts. The funny thing is that most of these kids are volunteers – only five positions are paid – and coming from someone who used to work at a college radio station, I guarantee that those paid positions were nothing compared to the money that the University spent on other things, which were not educational. Yes, the station equipment is an expense, but at the end of the day, this is about learning and it is not like Texas Tech was hurting for money. They had $164.35 million appropriated to them from the state for fiscal year 2008. However the total current funds revenues for fiscal year 2008 ended up at $218,898,035.00.

If it weren’t for college radio, I would have never gotten to where I am today. Neither would several of my coworkers. My station, KTCU, not only taught me the ropes, but also gave me the connections I needed to make when I was a music director. Those connections later on helped me securing my first job after graduation. I learned more behind the board at that station than I would have by some internship hanging up posters, or getting coffee. The sad thing is that I could see this happening at other schools too down the road.

I don’t mean to get on a rant here, but this is important. To find out how you can stand up and help, or to get more information on what happened, click the links below.

I do love me some old school early ’90s shoegaze. When looking through my personal music library, you’d find plenty of My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, 7% Solution, Ride, Swervedriver, it goes on and on. The crew over at XLR8R put together a mighty fine podcast of jams from throughout the shoegaze era, including a few recent gems that were heavily influenced by the genre. Download it here.

Last Wednesday evening Dangerbird’s Jeff Castelaz invaded the airwaves on KCRW, joining host Jason Bentley to chat about the Pablove Foundation and its recently released benefit CD. If you happened to be traveling for Thanksgiving and were unable to listen to the broadcast live, you’re still in luck. The show has been archived on the KCRW website for the time being, so go check it out while you can.
