If someone had to list one thing that they know about me it would have to be my obsession with my favorite band. We all have one, and for me it is Pulp. It’s been that way since I first heard Different Class back in high school. Being the nerd that I am, I am still following Jarvis’ solo career, saw him twice live when I lived in NYC, and even got the chance to interview him.
So what brings up this post? My friend Alan forwarded me a link today from BBC6. Recently Jarvis sat in for Stephen Merchant’s (of The Office and Extras) radio show. Jarvis’ theme is sad songs, songs about how things are now, etc. However, it’s no “Debby Downer;” in typical J-man fashion it is quirky and ironically upbeat.

Chip Kidd, on himself (in 2003):
The whole concept of being a “celebrity” book designer is completely insane, a total oxymoron. It’s like being the world’s most famous plumber or something.

Last Wednesday a few from the Dangerbird crew rolled out to NYC for this year’s CMJ Music Marathon. Matt, Adam, Erin and I came out to support The Dears and Eulogies for their two official CMJ performances, which you can read about here on a previous post. Between meetings with various contacts in town for the festivities, we also had time to visit some of our old haunts. Erin and I lived in the NYC area for a few years (Weehawken represent!), so we had a few must-hit stops while back in the Big Apple.
For starters, we hit up our favorite bar in NYC within minutes from checking in to our hotel. If you’re in the mood for a no bullshit, incredibly friendly Irish pub, I highly recommend The Scratcher (208 East 5th Street at Cooper Square). They pour a mean Guinness, something that I have a hard time finding anywhere else. If you happen to pop in, ask if Stevie or Tara happen to be around and tell them hello from us.

If you’re looking for a quick, inexpensive lunch, and happen to like dumplings, roll over to Dumpling Man (100 St. Marks Place). The dumplings are made right in front of you, fresh and ridiculously delicious. They have both meat and veggie, and their seasonal pumpkin ones are some of the best treats you’ll ever eat. Another favorite food spot of ours is Klong (also on St. Marks). It is a great Thai joint that has some insanely awesome fiery spicy basil noodles.

When hanging out in NYC, it is a given that you must have at least one slice of pizza. Well, if you don’t mind a bid of an adventure, hop on the PATH train or a NJ Transit bus to Hoboken and rock a slice at Benny Tudino’s Pizza (622 Washington St.). They boast about being home to “the largest slice,” which is no exaggeration. The damn slice takes up two plates, and it just about the best pizza I have ever had. I can assure you it is worth the effort to get there.

I am 110% sure that my Harman Kardon speakers sound way better than these, but I love the looks of these little guys from Holland, 1979. (A great year I might add.)
